The 2018 Season is a Wrap

We are very pleased with our 2018 sailing program outcome. We hope campers and parents alike feel the same. The boats are now put up for the off-season. We identified some hulls that are going to get repairs after close inpection identified problems at haul out. We want everythng ready to go next June for an even bigger and better 2019.

This year we added nine Xcite single-handers to bridge campers from Opti’s into other platforms. These were older boats that were given some new rigging, some new sails, and repairs so they could enter a new life with us. The campers thought these were a good acquisition. Campers also expressed real enjoyment of the doube-handed 420 platform this summer. So, we are looking to add one or two 420’s for next year. Our restricted Capital Fund (now available to accept your tax deductable donations) needs to be replenished to make this happen.

Our final 2018 activity is the “Amazing Gumbo Cook-Off Competition” being held at Tidewater Marina regatta room Thursday August 23. See the announcement below, come and watch local yacht club keel boats race, make a donation to the Youth Sailing Program Scholarship Fund, enjoy gumbo that was loving prepared by our program’s chefs who compete annually for “best gumbo bragging rights.” Please see the following announcement:

Hi Sailors and Youth Sailing Spporters!

It’s Gumbo Cook-Off time, Thursday August 23rd at 6:00. Hamburgers and hot dogs for kids early. The gumbo main event after racing finished about 7:30. Come on chefs, we need your Gumbo. Fair judging and bragging rights are guaranteed. Remember, also please see the request for donated raffle items.

It’s our 10th Annual! What a great tradition. The proceeds this year willl benefit the HdG Youth Sailing Program Scholarship Fund. We are also seek donations to continue to expand the fleet as we have more than doubled our class sizes from last year and look to further expand in 2019. We will ask for a donation of $10 pp for those folks not bringing a food dish. Children 10 and under are free. In addition to Gumbo, we need sides of all sorts.

Who is invited to this cook-off? All sailors, and family and guests of the Youth Sailing Program are welcome. This event is BYOB. The event will provide soft drinks.

So, who is bringing Gumbo or food sides? Please email me with your plans.

We are also asking for donated Items that can go in our raffle. We can give you a letter of donation for your taxes. So let me know that as well. Smaller items can be bundled, so no item is too small. Clear out that closet or sail locker!

Thank you!

Rick McGregor
