The Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) community sailing organization, seeks a Camp Director for the 2026 summer season. This position is in a beautiful waterfront town located where the Susquehanna River merges into the Chesapeake Bay. We sail from the Frank J Hutchins Public Park, offering basic and competitive dinghy sailing instruction to youth, ages 7-17, with a fleet comprising Optis/Prams, Lasers, C420s, Club TAZs, and Hunter Xcites. The program promotes safety, self-reliance, sportsmanship, teamwork, and environmental responsibility and has an emphasis on “Adventure Sailing” to the many fun and interesting places that are within our sailing area. The program also provides basic/intermediate/advanced instruction to those interested in that branch of sailing. Our goal is to instill a long-term love of sailing in our students, no matter their individual interests.

Salary: Salaried exempt with pay rate depending on experience and qualifications. Bonuses may be paid outside of annual active work period for special project assignments as negotiated.
Position Type: FT M-F, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, onsite during seasonal active work period with some remote work out of season and/or on weekends.
Seasonal Work Period (active camp): June 22 thru August 7th, with some days prior and following active camp.

General Information:
- The Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program is a Maryland Department of Health regulated youth day camp.
- Position is onsite during all camp activities and has primary responsibility for the administration of camp programming and operations
- Camp Director is a state-mandated position with the following minimal eligibility criteria:
- Age 21 or older
- Minimum of 24 weeks of previous experience in a children’s program
- Current First aid/CPR/AED certification
- Current SafeSport credential
- Current small boater’s safety certification
- US Sailing Level I (or better) Certification ; Or willingness to obtain Level 1 certification prior to start of camp (fees are reimbursable)
Camp Director Job Description:
Job requires an enthusiastic customer-oriented contributor to help manage Program’s seasonal activities and support its offseason planning. The Camp Director prioritizes the safety of all campers, staff, and volunteers to ensure an excellent camp experience while working in a regulated environment according to the camp’s “Handbook for Campers, Staff, and Volunteers.” Camp success requires
coordinating instructional staff activities with camp curriculum and the ability to assume responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the camp.
The job content will include, but is not limited to, the following roles and responsibilities:
- Consult with Camp Operating Committee as needed to resolve questions;
- Demonstrate working familiarity with camp’s “Handbook for Campers, Staff, and Volunteers;”
- Perform the role of camp’s designated Health Supervisor when the Camp Health Supervisor is not onsite;
- Open (8:00 AM) and close (4:00 PM) camp each day during the active work period to include securing of all buildings, operating equipment, and the site;
- Document daily camper arrival and departure for annual records, maintain the Camp Log of daily operation and events, and the Health Log;
- Maintain Health records of Camper’s, Staff, and Volunteer’s;
- Supervise use of camp curriculum with staff to ensure appropriate activities;
- Support instructional staff decision making about suitable camper activities to meet weather, camper special needs, and equipment constraints;
- Order and maintain availability of camp supplies (e.g., Merch offered for sale, chalk, office products, etc.);
- Perform annual training and onboarding for camp instructional staff using materials are previously developed;
- Maintain Health/Safety Incident Reports and document incident processes;
- Plan daily camp activities and create activity schedules;
- Present camp information to client families as needed;
- Participate in hiring camp staff under direction of Operating Committee;
- Oversee camp staff to ensure the wellbeing of campers;
- Ensure a safe and healthy camp environment co-located in a public venue; and
- Be able to demonstrate computer literacy and ability to use office software.
