The Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) community-oriented sailing organization, seeks Sailing Instructors for the current summer season. The position is full-time on-site from early June through mid-August. Havre de Grace, MD is a beautiful waterfront town located where the Susquehanna River merges into the Chesapeake Bay.

We offer basic and competitive dinghy sailing instruction to youth, ages 7-17, with a fleet comprising Optimists and equivalent prams, Lasers, C420s, and Hunter Xcites.  Sailing Instructors are responsible to teach students fundamental sailing skills and to promote safety, self-reliance, sportsmanship, teamwork, and environmental responsibility. The program has an emphasis on “Adventure Sailing,” given the many fun and interesting places that are within our sailing area, but also teaches “Performance Camps” for Optis and C420s.  Our goal is to instill a long-term love of sailing in our students, no matter their individual interests.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Sailing Instruction
  • Ensuring a safe, organized and educational maritime experience
  • Upkeep of boats, equipment, and facilities
  • Other responsibilities considered necessary to running a top notch sailing school

Job Requirements:

  • US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Certification (or above) for Instructors, including CPR , First Aid, and SAFESPORT certifications
  • 2 Years of prior experience volunteering or instructing in our Program or an equivalent for Interns and Sailing Associates
  • Maryland Safe Boating Certificate or equivalent for all paid staff (we can help you get this)
  • Must have demonstrable dinghy sailing skills
  • Prior work experience with youth, such as camp counselor or sailing instructor
  • Organized with good communication and leadership skills
  • Friendly, enthusiastic, comfortable working with adults and children
  • Strong Swimmer (life-saving certification a plus)
  • Physical demands: lifting and moving small sailboats, engines and other equipment
  • Must pass a MD State mandated FBI background check and CPS history check
  • Sailing Instructor work on an hourly basis and report to the Camp Director
