The Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) community-oriented sailing organization, is seeking a Sailing Instructor for the current summer season. The position is full-time and on-site from early June through mid-August. Havre de Grace, MD is a beautiful waterfront town located where the Susquehanna River merges into the Chesapeake Bay.
This is the fourth full season of the sailing program, offering basic and competitive dinghy sailing instruction to youth, ages 7-18, with a fleet comprising Optimists and equivalent prams, Lasers, 420s, and Hunter Xcites. Sailing Instructors are responsible to teach students fundamental sailing skills and to promote safety, self-reliance, sportsmanship, teamwork, and environmental responsibility. The program also has an emphasis on “Adventure Sailing,” given the many fun and interesting places that are within our sailing area. Our goal is to instill a long-term love of sailing in our students.
Responsibilities Include:
- Sailing Instruction
- Ensuring a safe, organized and educational maritime experience
- Upkeep of boats, equipment, and facilities
- Other responsibilities considered necessary to running a good sailing school
Job Requirements:
- At least US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Certification
- Current CPR and First Aid certification
- Maryland Safe Boating Certificate or equivalent (we can help you get this)
- Must have excellent sailing skills and experience teaching kids in similar sailing programs
- Prior work experience with youth, such as camp counselor or sailing instructor
- Organized with good communication and leadership skills
- Friendly, enthusiastic, comfortable working with adults and children
- Strong Swimmer (life-saving certification a plus)
- Physical demands: lifting and moving small sailboats, engines and other equipment
- Must pass a standard background check
- The Sailing Instructor will report to the Head Sailing Instructor
